Avila Valley Grapevine - March 25, 2010: Successful Plan & Reality TV

by John Salisbury of Salisbury Vineyardshttp://www.inthevines.comHalleluiah! “All’s well that ends well”. On March 19th, Federal Judge Robin Riblett approved our plan to pay 100% to our creditors on the reorganization of our vineyard (one of our four companies). This is the 113 acre property surrounding the Bassi Ranch Estates, with 30 acres of vineyards, which we planted 10 years ago. We were happily leasing it long term but because the previous owner…See More

AVILA VALLEY GRAPEVINE – February 19, 2010: 2009 Crush Report and February Weather

by John Salisbury of Salisbury Vineyardshttp://www.facebook.com/salisbury.vineyards I’ve been telling you that we just had the perfect growing year and that is now confirmed with 2009 being the second biggest year on record. The wineries of California processed nearly 3,700,000 tons just short of the record of 3,760,000 in 2005. We were up by 24% from last year’s short crop. San Luis Obispo and Santa Barbara counties together were up a…See More

AVILA VALLEY GRAPEVINE – January 29, 2010: Rain, Rain and Crazy Wine Laws

It looks like we are finally getting blessed with a little more rain. Bring it on! We need it to clean accumulated salts out of the root zone that were deposited with our irrigation water that, like most water in the Valley, is high in iron, manganese, and hydrogen sulfates. Also, it is obviously important to refresh our aquifers, lakes, and creeks after several years of drought. If El Nino comes through as expected, we can delay our first irrigations by several weeks as compared to the last…See More

AVILA VALLEY GRAPEVINE – December 23, 2009: Great Growing Season and The Rest of the Story, Part II

Happy New Year. We are sure glad to get out of the last one; we were battered but not beaten - not by a long shot. On the agricultural end, it couldn’t have been a better one. Thanks to a great growing season, we had a rare combination of an extremely bountiful winegrape harvest coupled with great quality. Our early tasting of the 2009 vintage is promising some of the best wines we have ever produced. Probably the same is true for other local wineries. It is also helpful that we finally have a…See More

THE REST OF THE STORY .....

When The Tribune Gets It Wrong, by John Salisbury“Reports of my demise have been greatly exaggerated,” as penned by Mark Twain, seems an appropriate reply to The Tribune’s unfortunate and erroneous “Big Buzz” article from December 3.Our business has suffered greatly since The Tribune published their article. We’ve even had customers call and offer their condolences. It would be funny, if it wasn’t so serious. To clarify: Salisbury Vineyards, Inc is our successful core business, handling all of…See More

AVILA VALLEY GRAPEVINE – November 19, 2009: Winter Holidays and Recipes to Pair from our Avila Wineries

It is that happy time of year again to be able to wish you a very Merry Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza plus any other notable festivities that happen this month. Those of us in the Valley that are in the wine business want to thank each and every one of you for your support during this crazy financial year. I think it is safe to say, with your help, that we all have done much better than survive and look forward to an even greater wine year coming up.Once again, we wish toyou give you some…See More

Avila Valley Grapevine, May 2010: More Closure Studies & the Avila Wine Trail

by John Salisbury of Salisbury Vineyards

“To Screw or not to Screw, That is the Question”. Of course, I am talking about screw caps versus corks – what were some of you thinking? Some real interesting facts came out of an article in Science News. In a survey that focused on the chemistry and flavor of two of our main varietals, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, consumers couldn’t tell… Continue
